Antiseptics

Eczema sufferers frequently have high levels of bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) present on the skin. Although infection is the usual problem associated with bacteria, researchers across the world are now demonstrating that these bacteria worsen eczema, without necessarily producing infection on the skin.

The key to this is the hyperactive nature of the immune system in people with atopic eczema. The bacteria have several ways of stimulating the immune system with the result of worsening the eczema. Emollients that contain antiseptics help reduce the levels of bacteria on the skin, and prevent their build up. This in turn help reduce the levels of flare-ups experienced, and also the need to use antibiotics and more potent steroids.
