Topical Steroids
If the skin becomes red and inflamed the use of a topical steroid may be needed to control the condition. The topical steroid help to calm down the immune system and make it less reactive to irritants. This is a safe and effective means of treating flare-ups. Steroids reduce inflammation and are available in different levels of potency.
Generally a mild to moderate topical steroid such as 1% hydrocortisone is usually sufficient. Used sensibly, topical steroids should not cause side effects.
