Normally, the skin is kept moisturised and supple by a range of natural agents. However, if they do not function properly, water escapes from the skin too quickly. The skin becomes dry and the symptom of this is itch. The barrier of the skin is also compromised and irritants can get easier access through the skin leading to irritation and rash.
Amongst the dry skin conditions, atopic eczema deserves special mention. The skin is dry as a result of an inherited factor. A second factor can make the immune system hyper-reactive to the irritants which penetrate the skin as a result of the reduced oil content. Simple substances can produce big reactions and some infections need special attention.
